Who We Are

Self Help Center was founded in 1988 as a Consumer Operated Services Program funded by the National Institutes of Health, one of the original thirteen consumer programs to be funded by Federal funds.  The Center’s founder, Daniel Link (1952–2012), a student working on his Masters thesis, made the choice to make the Center an independent 501(c)(3) non‐profit organization.

Self Help Center, originally located in Kirkwood, Missouri, moved to its current location in October 2008.  Boasting a 4,500 sq. ft. facility, Self Help Center has four staff offices, reception, library, large multipurpose room, kitchenette, and social room/computer lab.

Self Help Center provides wellness and recovery programs for the adult population age 18 and older who are living with symptoms of mental illness and/or substance use disorders.  For more information about our services, please see the Services page.

Self Help Center is currently funded through a contract with the Missouri Department of Mental Health and private donations.  For information on how you can support Self Help Center please email our Executive Director at nancy.bollinger@selfhelpcenter.org.

Our Mission

To provide a safe, healthy, and comfortable environment where adults with mental illness may find hope and encouragement to take responsibility for their recovery through self help, peer support, socialization, spiritual growth, and education.

Our Philosophy

We cannot force others to change.  We can offer them a positive mental atmosphere where they have the possibility to change if they wish, but we cannot do it for or to other people.

Everyone is here to work out their own lessons, and if we fix it for them then they will just go and do it again because they have not worked out what they needed to do for themselves.

All we can do is love, support, encourage, and respect them.  Allow them to be who they are.  Know that the truth is always within and individuals can change at any moment they choose.
